Year 1 - Willow Class

Welcome to Year 1!

Highlight of the week 24/11/25: Year One enjoyed a fantastic school trip to Aldenham Country Park. It was the perfect trip to complement our Science topic, ‘All about Animals’ and Geography topic ‘At the Farm’. We saw, fed, petted and learnt all about animals on the farm. We also spotted all the different farm buildings. We are learning how different farms are to towns. There are not as many people as there are in town or as many houses, cars, roads, traffic lights - but a lot of animals! We are also beginning to understand why farms are important and what it would be like to live on a farm. We were all so proud of Year One - braving the weather but still learning
and enjoying themselves.

Highlight of the week 10/11/25: Year One have been very busy these past two weeks preparing for our Gruffalo Party. Last week, we wrote invitations to the Year 2 and started preparing for our party. This week we have been writing recipes, making the food, party hats and placemats. Alongside writing and ordering instructions for a game and activity. Year One are superb hosts and created a wonderful, fun party!

Highlight of the week 20/10/25: Year One have been bringing to conclusion many of our units of work. We ended our brilliant History topic, ‘Back in My Day’ with burying a time capsule. We filled it with objects from the present that represent Year One. It will be interesting in the future (maybe when they are in Year 6?) to see if those objects have changed in any way. We are ending our Puffin Peter English unit by making our own Puffin Peter Class Book. We are even working on publishing our version on ‘What happens Next’. Of course, we always have some time to explore and construct in our Outside Classroom. They have worked hard this half term. We are all very proud of Willows Class!

Highlight of the week 6/10/25: Year One have been busy, planting beans and writing up posters on,’ How to Plant a Bean.’ So, they can share with their family all the information they would need to plant their own bean! Year One also had a very exciting live History lesson with Grannie Jennie - learning all about how she celebrated her birthday when she was a child. Year One were fascinated to find out what was the same in how they celebrate their birthdays now and what was different. Thank you Grannie Jennie for visiting Willow Class and sharing your stories.

Highlight of the week 22/09/25: What a wonderful launch day! The children looked fabulous in their dress up from the past! We spent the afternoon looking at items from the past and sorting them into oldest to newest. They were great history detectives looking at the materials items were made from, discovering their function and then putting them on a rough timeline. Well done Willows Class (and well done parents for the creative costumes!).

Highlight of the week 8/09/25: Year One are amazing! It’s only been a week back at school, but they are coming to grips with the new routines and learning. The have learnt about the Zones of Regulation. This is where we understand that we all have big feelings sometimes and that’s ok- we just need to use our strategies to get to the zone we need to be in to be safe and happy. The best zone for learning in the classroom is the Green Zone.
That is when you are calm, focused and ready to learn. Can you guess which picture of Willow Class show
them in Green Zone?
