Year 4 - Ash Class

Welcome to Year 4!

Highlight of the week 31/03/25: Last Thursday, our Year 4 pupils had an absolute blast taking part in an awesome skipping workshop! It was full of energy, laughter, and a proper workout. The children learned new techniques, challenged themselves, and left with big smiles and tired legs! We’d also like to give a special mention to our beautiful Easter service this morning. The poems read by our students were heartfelt and thoughtful—what a lovely way to celebrate the season.

Highlight of the week 17/03/25: Year 4 embarked on an exciting combined Art and History lesson, diving into the fascinating world of the Anglo-Saxons. We began by exploring how the Anglo-Saxons transitioned from Paganism to Christianity—a pivotal moment in history that inspired our creative project. The highlight of the lesson was designing and creating our very own Anglo-Saxon crosses.

Highlight of the week 03/03/25: We are excited to share that Year 4 has officially launched our new topic on the Anglo-Saxons! The children have already been immersed in some fantastic hands-on learning experiences. To kick off the topic, we explored the history of Anglo-Saxon shields and had the opportunity to design and create our own versions. The class really enjoyed bringing this aspect of the past to life! In addition, we became archaeologists for the day and ‘discovered’ artefacts, which the children then studied closely to create fact profiles. It was a brilliant way for them to develop their investigative skills while learning about life in Anglo-Saxon times.

Highlight of the week 10/02/25: Year 4 had a fantastic lesson this week, combining computing and geography to compare Italy and England! The class showcased impressive research skills, using our Chromebooks to create detailed fact files highlighting key differences and similarities between the two countries. It was a fun and engaging way to wrap up this term’s geography topic, and the children did a brilliant job presenting their findings. Well done Year 4!

Highlight of the week 27/01/25: Year 4 had a fantastic time at Pizza Express, learning about food
preparation and making their own delicious pizzas! The expert pizzaiolos guided the children through the process, from spreading out the tomato sauce to adding fresh toppings. They also discovered the importance of healthy eating and the history of pizza. The trip also included a short visit to the Radlett library and the park which gave us an extra awesome experience. Overall it was an amazing field trip and a truly tasty experience!

Highlight of the week 13/01/25: What an incredible week it has been! This week, our learning adventures took us beyond the walls of our usual classroom, and the results have been inspiring. The class embraced the opportunity to explore new learning environments, including the hall, the EYFS area, the library and even the Year 6 classroom. I am incredibly proud of how adaptable and enthusiastic the class has been throughout this week. Moving to different spaces could have been a challenge, but the children showed resilience, positivity and a willingness to make the most of every opportunity. Thank you for your continued support in fostering such a flexible and eager group of learners. Here’s to more exciting weeks ahead!

Highlight of the week 9/12/24: As the Autumn term comes to a close, Year 4 has been full of festive cheer and creative energy! Here’s a roundup of the exciting activities we’ve been up to as we celebrated the magic of Christmas together. Last week and this week, we unleashed our inner artists by making beautiful Christmas decorations, be-came future 'British Bake Off' champions by creating wonderful Christmas treats for the Christmas Fayre, however, the highlight of the week was undoubtedly our Christmas lunch. The hall was filled with laughter and the sound of crackers being pulled as we enjoyed a hearty and delicious festive meal together. It was a fantastic way to celebrate all our hard work this term and to look forward to the holidays. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from everyone in Year 4!

Highlight of the week 25/11/24: Last week, the Year 4s had an incredible trip to the Cathedral, stepping back in time to experience Roman history firsthand! The children took part in a mosaic-making workshop, where they learned about the intricate designs used in Roman homes and even created their own colourful patterns. They also brought history to life by roleplaying the history of Alban, Britain’s first Christian martyr, taking on roles as Roman soldiers, townspeople and Alban himself. It was a fun and educational day, sparking curiosity and creativity. We can’t wait for our next field trip!

Highlight of the week 11/11/24: This week, Year 4 embraced the theme of Kindness during Anti-bullying Week. Through discussions and activities, the class explored how small acts of kindness can make a big difference and why it’s important to stand up against bullying. The children demonstrated their creativity by designing eye-catching posters to promote awareness of anti-bullying. Year 4’s enthusiasm and teamwork have been inspiring, reminding us all that kindness is key to creating a safe and happy environment!

Highlight of the week 21/10/24: A true highlight of this term has been making our VOLATILE VOLCANOES! Our Year 4 class has had so much fun learning how to make a volcano using different D&T skills to eventually make magnificent creations. As part of this process, they will erupt their volcanoes by combining different materials to simulate the same reaction. The perfect end to an amazing term. Well done Year 4s!

Highlight of the week 07/10/24: Wow! What an amazing time Ash class had at their first whole class forest school session. We learnt about different skills like making tents and creating shelters while also working in collaboration with each other which improved our teamwork skills. Mrs Mitchell taught us how to make volcanoes out of mud and we even had the chance to combine materials and erupt our volatile volcanoes. Everyone had so much fun and there was a smile on every child's face walking out of forest school. A big thank you to Mrs Mitchell for teaching us how to work together and the rules and skills of forest school. We can't wait for our next lesson. Well done Year 4s!

Highlight of the week 23/09/24: This week's highlight of the week has been our Maths lesson. We have been learning about place value and how we can partition numbers or add and subtract to manipulate our values. It has been awesome to see our wonderful class push themselves and really dig deep to further their understanding of numbers in maths. Well done Year 4s!

Highlight of the week 09/09/24: On Monday, our wonderful Year 4 children enjoyed their first WOW day of the year. We learnt about volcanoes and watched videos which helped make us understand how volcanoes erupt. We also tried out a science experiment to recreate a volcanic eruption by mixing different materials. In the photos you can see our awesome volcano paintings ready to be displayed on our topic board! Well done to Year 4!
