D & T
Discover how Design Technology comes to life at Park Street – how we spark curiosity, build confidence and create engaging learning experiences that help children develop practical and problem-solving skills and a love of learning enabling them to flourish.
INTENT
At Park Street, we believe Design Technology is fundamental in developing creativity, resilience, problem-solving and practical confidence. Our DT curriculum is designed to inspire pupils to think imaginatively and critically, empowering them to design and make purposeful, real-world products. Through DT, children explore how technology influences daily life and the wider world, while considering the needs, values and perspectives of others. We aim for all pupils to build their technical knowledge and skills progressively, understand key design principles and appreciate how innovation and creativity can make a meaningful difference to people’s lives, enabling them to flourish as capable, confident and resourceful learners.
IMPLEMENTATION
At Park Street, Design Technology is taught through structured and progressive units that develop pupils’ practical skills, creativity, and problem-solving abilities. Lessons focus on the full design process: investigating, designing, making, testing, and evaluating products. Pupils work with a variety of materials and tools, including textiles, mechanisms and food, applying technical knowledge to create purposeful outcomes.
Practical experimentation, collaborative projects, and reflective discussion are central to our approach, allowing pupils to learn from both successes and challenges. Children are encouraged to take design risks, refine their ideas, and consider functionality, sustainability, and user needs. Through these experiences, pupils develop resilience, independence, and a lifelong curiosity about how things are made, preparing them with skills and confidence to flourish.
