INTENT

At Park Street, our aim is to foster a love of languages and to help children become confident, curious and enthusiastic language learners. We want pupils to understand that learning another language opens doors to new cultures, new ways of thinking and a wider world beyond their own experiences.

Although French is taught formally in Key Stage 2, we introduce children to languages from the very start of their school journey. Early Years pupils enjoy playful exposure to languages such as Spanish through songs, stories and simple vocabulary, helping them develop positive attitudes towards language learning.

Our aim is for pupils to build strong foundations in listening, speaking, reading and writing in French, while also developing cultural awareness and an appreciation of the diversity of languages spoken around the world. We want children to feel confident communicating in another language and to recognise that language learning is a valuable skill they can continue to build throughout their lives.

IMPLEMENTATION

Modern Foreign Languages at Park Street are taught through a structured and progressive curriculum supported by Language Angels, which provides high‑quality resources, clear sequencing and engaging lessons. This ensures that pupils build their French knowledge step by step, developing confidence in listening, speaking, reading and writing.

In Key Stage 2, children follow the Language Angels programme, which introduces new vocabulary and grammar through songs, stories, games, role‑play and short written activities. Lessons are interactive and practical, giving pupils regular opportunities to practise speaking aloud, listen carefully and apply what they have learned in meaningful contexts.

In Early Years, children are introduced to languages informally, including simple Spanish words and phrases through songs, stories and classroom routines. This early exposure helps them develop enthusiasm for language learning and builds the foundations for more formal study in KS2.

Cultural understanding is woven throughout the curriculum. Pupils learn about French‑speaking countries, traditions and celebrations, helping them appreciate the diversity of languages and cultures around the world. We enrich this further through whole‑school events such as French Days, where children enjoy themed activities, food, music and cultural experiences that bring language learning to life.

Across the school, pupils are encouraged to be confident, curious and willing to ‘have a go’. Our approach ensures that all children experience enjoyable, purposeful and inclusive language learning that prepares them well for further study.
