RHE/PSHE

Discover how PSHE/RSHE comes to life at Park Street – how we nurture personal growth, build confidence and create meaningful learning experiences that help children develop essential life skills, positive relationships and a strong sense of wellbeing so every child can flourish.

INTENT

At Park Street CE Primary School, our RHE and PSHE curriculum is designed to help pupils develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes they need to thrive as individuals and as members of society. We aim to:

  • Promote emotional well-being and resilience, enabling pupils to manage challenges and make informed, safe choices.
  • Foster positive relationships built on respect, empathy, and understanding, preparing pupils to interact confidently in diverse communities.
  • Equip pupils with strategies to stay safe in a rapidly changing world, including online safety and personal boundaries.
  • Encourage healthy lifestyles, supporting pupils to make decisions that benefit their physical and mental health.
  • Develop a strong sense of identity and belonging, rooted in British values and our school values, so pupils contribute positively to both local and global communities.
  • Prepare pupils for life beyond school, helping them to become confident, responsible, and well-rounded individuals.

IMPLEMENTATION

Since September 2020, it has been a statutory requirement for all primary schools to teach Relationships Education and Health Education, including essential knowledge about puberty and the changing adolescent body. At Park Street, we fulfil these requirements through the SCARF programme, developed by Coram Life Education. This high-quality scheme provides a structured, age-appropriate curriculum that ensures progression and consistency across all year groups.

As a Church of England school, our approach is rooted in the Christian values of love, joy, and the celebration of every individual’s worth. We uphold the principle that everyone is known and loved by God and supported to recognise their intrinsic value (Valuing All God’s Children, The Most Revd and Rt Hon Justin Welby, 2019). This ethos underpins all aspects of our RHE and PSHE provision.

How we deliver RHE and PSHE:

  • Structured progression: Each year group follows a half-termly unit of work aligned with the statutory requirements set out by the Department for Education (DfE, 2020).
  • Thematic approach: All year groups explore the same theme each half term, with content carefully sequenced to build on prior learning and deepen understanding as pupils move through the school.
  • High-quality teaching: Lessons are delivered with care and expertise, ensuring content is accurate, age-appropriate, and presented in a safe and supportive environment.
  • Optimal timing: Sessions are scheduled for the morning or early afternoon to maximise engagement and focus.

Our implementation ensures that pupils develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes they need to thrive-emotionally, socially, and physically-both now and in the future.
