Wellbeing

At Park Street, we take mental health and wellbeing very seriously. We are committed to supporting the emotional wellbeing of our pupils, staff and wider school community. We recognise that everyone faces life’s challenges at times, and that anyone may need additional support. We believe that positive mental health is everyone’s responsibility, and that we all have a role to play in creating a supportive, understanding school environment.

Children’s wellbeing is at the heart of everything we do. Alongside our nurturing school culture, we provide a range of experiences that help pupils feel calm, connected and supported. We actively promote positive mental health by offering guidance for pupils and parents, signposting to specialist agencies where needed, and sharing activities that build emotional literacy. Our approach places a strong emphasis on developing self‑awareness, managing feelings, motivation, empathy and social skills — the foundations of healthy emotional development.

Nurture Forest Sessions

Our Nurture Forest group sessions give children the chance to spend time outdoors, build confidence and develop emotional resilience. Through activities such as team challenges, nature exploration, creative tasks and quiet reflection, pupils learn to manage emotions, strengthen relationships and enjoy the wellbeing benefits of being in nature. These sessions provide a safe, supportive space where children can talk, play and grow at their own pace.

Our Wellbeing Tortoise

We are also proud to have our very own wellbeing tortoise, Ffej, who plays a special role in supporting children’s emotional development. Spending time with the tortoise helps pupils feel calm, grounded and connected. Caring for an animal encourages responsibility, empathy and gentle communication, and many children find that interacting with Ffej brings comfort and reduces anxiety. Ffej is a much‑loved member of our school community and a wonderful source of joy and reassurance.

Worry Box

Everyday life can sometimes be tricky, and it can make children feel sad, lonely, worried, nervous, angry plus many other emotions. Whilst these are 'normal' and part of what makes us human, they can leave children feeling deregulated and unsure of how to express their feelings — sometimes they don't have the words.  Often we may see a resulting behaviour which gives an outward clue that a child may need some help.

To support children in managing their feelings, each class has a box to post their worry into. They can simply post their name into the box on a post-it note.  A symbol placed on the front will indicate that the teacher/teaching assistant needs to check the box.  The child will then be offered some time to talk away from other children.

Together, these experiences help us create a school environment where every child feels valued, supported and able to flourish - emotionally, socially and academically.
