Music

Discover how Music comes to life at Park Street - how we inspire creativity, build confidence and create joyful learning experiences that help children develop musical knowledge, skills and a love of music so every child can flourish.

INTENT

At Park Street, we aim to inspire a love of music and to give every child the chance to express themselves creatively. We want pupils to enjoy listening to, performing and creating music, and to develop the confidence to share their musical ideas with others.

Our curriculum aims to build musical understanding step by step, helping children make connections between pulse, rhythm, pitch, notation and performance. We want pupils to experience a wide range of musical styles and traditions so they can appreciate music from different cultures, times and places.

We believe that music should be inclusive and accessible to all. Every child is encouraged to take part, try new instruments, and discover their own musical strengths. Through singing, playing, composing and performing, we aim to nurture creativity, teamwork and a lifelong enjoyment of music.

IMPLEMENTATION

Music is taught through a carefully sequenced curriculum that supports children in developing their musical knowledge and skills over time. Lessons include singing, listening, composing and performing, with clear progression from Early Years to Year 6.

We use a structured scheme that provides high‑quality resources, engaging songs and well‑planned units to support teachers in delivering consistent and enjoyable music lessons. Children learn key musical concepts through practical activities, repetition and hands‑on exploration.

Instrumental learning is an important part of our curriculum. All pupils have the opportunity to learn the keyboard and/or recorder, helping them develop confidence in reading notation, playing as part of an ensemble and performing to others.

We also enrich the curriculum through wider musical experiences. Pupils take part in activities such as steel pan workshops, visiting performances and whole‑school singing events, giving them the chance to experience music beyond the classroom and explore different musical traditions.

Throughout the school, children are encouraged to listen carefully, respond thoughtfully and perform with increasing accuracy and expression. Our approach ensures that all pupils can enjoy music, develop their skills and grow as confident young musicians.
