Phonics and Reading

Phonics: Phonics is taught on a daily basis in both Early Years and KS1. Our team work closely together, using a range of different resources, to ensure our teaching is interactive and of a high standard. The programme we use to help enable our school to have a clear and effective approach to the teaching of phonics is: Bug Club Phonics (a DfE validated programme)

Reading: We use a range of reading publisher schemes, all graded to different levels of difficulty. This is done to ensure the children have the exposure and opportunity to read a variety of different genres and writing styles. We hope to add to this collection throughout the year. Every teacher endeavours to use and teach from quality texts. This gives children the experience of reading great writing, sparks their imagination and aids their own writing.

In Key Stage 1 and 2, children take part in Guided Reading sessions which demonstrate a range of skills, enabling children to decode and comprehend what they read. These sessions adopt a ‘Whole Class’ approach, during which the class shares the same text with a specific skills focus.

Children are able to access the school library on a weekly basis, allowing their imaginations to run free.  As well as the quality core texts read in class, the children have access to a wide range of interests and experiences through books.

Children also have access to an online reading platform called Bug Club. Every child has their own personal login with a range of reading material which has been personally set by their teacher. This can be accessed at home from any device.

Children are expected to read at home daily; this helps to develop confidence and fluency.
